Advanced Pain Medicine Associates breaks ground on new facility
Wichita Business Journal - by Adam Knapp
Advanced Pain Medicine Associates office manager Kim Talley, left, and physician Jon Parks will soon be moving into a new facility.
Advanced Pain Medicine Associates, an 8-year-old physician-owned practice, has broken ground on a new $2.5 million facility on the southwest corner of Oliver and 37th Street.
APMA, formerly known as Advanced Anesthesia Associates, performs full-service pain therapy, interventional procedures, medication and coordination between other specialists such as neurosurgeons or family practice doctors.
Owner Jon Parker says there are several reasons a new facility is needed.
Its current location is at 1245 N. West St., a 9,000-square-foot building owned by Via Christi Regional Medical Center, where APMA has been since 2003. The goal has always been for APMA to own its building, Parker says.
"Like everyone out there, we'd like to build equity," Parker says.
The new building will be 11,300 square feet.
The current location "is a primary-care office and it's not configured particularly well," Parker says. "It's not conducive to what our practice is."
While the new building won't be much bigger, its layout will improve the way APMA does business, Parker says. "It can accommodate a lot more because of the way it's designed, and it can allow for expansion," he says.
APMA will likely have 1,000 square feet to the north of its new building to rent for office space, Parker says.
The practice has 17 employees, including two physicians and two physician assistants. Talley says the new building will have enough space for the addition of two more doctors and two more PAs.
Rodney Jones, owner of Pain Management Associates, 825 N. Hillside, is the closest thing to a local competitor for APMA. However, his practice does not prescribe drugs.
"I didn't know they were building a new building," Jones says. "Obviously, they've got enough business to feel like they can do that, which is good. They need the capacity to handle that stuff. I wish them good luck."
Talley says each of the rooms in the new building will have windows, and even the interior hallway will have natural light.
Although the building will not be LEED certified, Parker says there have been efforts made by PBA and Key to make it energy efficient.
"We're trying to make it as light and open as possible," Parker says. "It's probably an overreaction to being in the gray, windowless hole we're in here."
